6 Simple Ways To Cut Your Phone Bill In Half

cut cell phone bill in half

Cell phones are a necessary evil these days. It’s difficult to live without one, but man are they a pain in the butt when paying ALL the extensive fees that come with it. While I can’t offer you a free cell phone plan (I wish), I CAN give you 6 legit ways to lower your cell phone bill, and potentially even cut it in HALF by next month! I’ve used these ideas to cut my own cell phone bell in half, and I hope they work as well for you as they have for me.

Let’s take a look at 6 ways you can dramatically lower your cell phone bill expenses:

Get A Prepaid Plan:
A prepaid plan has you in control. YOU know how much you’re spending because you pay upfront for x amount of minutes/text/data. With a contract, you get billed at the end of the month based on what you’re locked into. You may be paying for more than you need, OR you are paying the lowest possible option which is causing you to rack up charges for going over your limit at the end of month.

Use Wifi Instead Of Data:
If there’s a free wifi option wherever you are, USE IT. Keep your wifi on at all times so it will connect automatically or let you know there is a wifi option.  I rarely use data because at work I use wifi and at home I use wifi. This will help you not have to pay extra for data when you run out and need more, or suffer the consequences and go without data.

Add Lines If Possible:
Family plans are almost always cheaper than an individual line. MOST* carriers drop on average 10-15$ per line with each line that you add to your family plan. So you might pay $75 dollars for just your own line but add one more line and now you’re paying $60-$65 per line.  If you have a family of five who all have cell phones, you could drop each line down to $10-$25 per month.

Track Your Usage And Downgrade If Necessary:
You should only be paying for the data you actually use. Cell phone companies are masterminds at charging you for any and every little thing possible. Go through your cell phone bill with a fine tooth comb and make sure everything listed is something you want and/or need. If not, have a chat with your carrier and get rid of the unnecessary bells and whistles.

Remind Your Carrier Of Your Loyalty:
My husband did this with his old carrier, Virgin Mobile, after he’d had them for 5 years and they lowered his phone bill solely because he was a loyal customer. It’s worth a shot! It’s also worth mentioning T-mobile did NOT lower my phone bill when I attempted to do the same thing my husband had, even though I had been with T-mobile for 9 years. Instead, they offered to give me a “phone upgrade” that I still had to pay 300 dollars for AND was crappier than the phone I already owned. NO THANKS. That was my last straw with T-mobile. I switched carriers and don’t forsee myself ever going back in the future.

Know What Works In Your Area:
I used to have T-mobile for the first 9 years of owning a cell phone. And because of the area I lived in, they were AWFUL. The second I switched to AT&T on a prepaid plan, not only did my cell phone bill go way down, but my service always was superb, no matter where I was. I could actually have a phone call without it dropping. AMAZING.

And That’s A Wrap!

I hope I’ve given you a few fresh ideas to lower your cell phone bill so it’s no longer burning a hole in your budget. You may need a cell phone to communicate but you DON’T need to pay an arm and a leg for it. Let me know in the comments below if you think any of these ideas might work for you and please feel free to share ideas that have worked for you that I didn’t mention! I love to learn new ways to save money as much as you do 🙂
