What is VIPKID?

VIPKID is an online education program that provides an education to children in China between the ages of 4 and 12. VIPKID hires qualified individuals to be online teachers, with its focus on giving Chinese children an English language education based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards.

I’m Not A Certified Teacher – Who Can Apply?

If you meet this criteria, you qualify to apply:

– Legally eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada (but you can still work from other locations in the world)
– Bachelor’s degree or higher (can be in any field)

Where Can I Work From?

You can work from virtually anywhere as long as you have a stable internet connection. However, it’s also important you’re in a place where you’re able to teach without interruptions and have good lighting.

Do I Have To Make My Own Lesson Plans And Buy Teaching Materials?

One of the many awesome benefits of teaching with VIPKID is you don’t have to create your own lesson plans OR buy your own classroom materials.

Before each lesson, simply review the lesson content and gather a few items around your home that you can use as visuals for the lesson that day. As far as creating your own teaching materials, you might have to create flashcards for a lesson, but that’s as far as making your own materials goes.

Do I Have To Grade Papers?

Nope!  The only thing that is required of you after a lesson is completed is leaving comments for the student to see how they did after the lesson. This takes no more than 5 minutes to complete.

How Many Students Will I Be Teaching At A Time?

Instead of having a room full of students, you’ll get to enjoy the ease of teaching one student at a time. VIPKID requires classes to always be one-on-one to make sure students always get 100% of their teacher’s attention and support.

Do I Have To Talk To The Children’s Parents?

No, VIPKID takes care of communicating with the student’s parents so you don’t have to.

What Are The Hours?

YOU set YOUR hours.

Does it get any better than that?

VIPKID has no limit on how much a teacher teaches. Teachers have 100% control over their schedule. Weekdays, weekends, doesn’t matter. You can work anytime you choose and as many hours per week as you’d like. One week you might choose to teach 5 hours and the following week 25 hours. It’s all up to you.

They do recommend you to book your classes during peak time to ensure getting as many classes as you’d like filled. Peak times are Monday-Friday from 6 to 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 10 pm, all Beijing time.

How Long Is Each Class?

Each class is 25 minutes, but as mentioned above teachers take a few minutes to leave comments after the class has ended.

How Do I Earn Money?

Take a look at the chart below for reference. Minimum pay (your pay is higher based on experience, ability to teach, and education level) is $7 per 1 class. There are incentives that add to each class’s pay, as shown below. If you show up to your class that you scheduled with your student without canceling, you’ll get an extra $1. If you are able to complete 30+ classes in a month (this number is subject to change) you’ll get an extra $1 for each class you completed. So the minimum amount you’d be making per hour is $14 (2 classes per hour at $7/hour) and the maximum you’ll make per hour is $22 (2 classes at $11 per hour).

Will I Get Rich Quick?

No. If anybody ever promises you a get rich quick job, they are fooling you. HARD WORK will earn you money. And just like with VIPKID, if you put in the class time and work hard at being the best teacher you can be for your students, you will earn a nice $22/hour. But no, this is not a get rich fast scheme. However, teachers do earn upwards of $2500/month working around 25 hours per week. (Teachers can get bonuses on top of their regular pay for referring more teachers to VIPKID). So it’s certainly a fantastic job option for somebody who wants flexible hours with a generous pay.

Teachers are contracted for 6 months. After their contract is up, they will either be given the approval to renew their contract or their contract will no be renewed. At the point of renewal, teachers will be evaluated for a raise in pay.

When Do I Get Paid?

Teachers are paid through direct bank deposits between the 10th and 15th of each month.

What Does The Application Process Look Like?

Step 1 – Send in your resume. If they feel you’d be a good fit for VIPKID, you’ll move on to step 2.

Step 2 – You’ll interview with a VIPKID recruiter, showing them a demo lesson to prove you’d be a good fit for the job.

OR

You’ll record your demo lesson and send it in so a VIPKID recruiter can evaluate your teaching ability.

TIP: They love TPR (Total Physical Response). For example, If I’m saying eyes on me, I’d point to my eyes and then point to me as I’m saying it. Always have the kids do TPR as it helps them lock in their brain what they are learning.

Step 3 – Introduction to Teaching With VIPKID: Go through training videos to learn about what you’ll be teaching and what the technology for the lessons with look like.

Step 4 – Mock Class: You’ll practice teaching a full length class with a VIPKID teacher, showing you’re able to teach with the provided lessons.

Step 5 – Sign your contracts, upload required information (helps VIPKID parents know who you are so they can book you), and complete a background check.

Step 6 – You’re now a VIPKID teacher! You’ll be able to put your timeslots on your portal so that VIPKID students can start booking you. YAY! 🙂
